Much of that gap traces back to the decision, in 2006, to leave Highbury for the Emirates Stadium. The move was built around a long-term financial bet: a bigger ground would eventually fund a squad capable of competing with the league's wealthiest clubs, but the stadium debt that came with it constrained transfer spending for years, exactly during a period when several rivals were investing heavily in their own squads. The Emirates filled every week. The trophy shelf, for the league specifically, stayed empty for a lot longer than anyone at the club expected when the project was approved.
The 2025/26 season changed that, arriving as the culmination of several years of squad-building under Arteta rather than a single dramatic turnaround. It was Arsenal's fourteenth English top-flight title in all, and the first to be won entirely at the Emirates - every previous league title in the club's history had been claimed while the team still called Highbury home.
What made the wait feel especially long wasn't just its length. It was the number of near-misses stacked up inside it: second-place finishes, strong seasons that fell just short, years in which the squad looked close enough to contending that the eventual gap to the title still stung.
