Alf Common
Forward1910–1912
No individual photograph is known to survive for Alf Common; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.
By the time Common joined Woolwich Arsenal he was already one of the most famous names in English football: his 1905 move from Sunderland to Middlesbrough, for £1,000, was the first four-figure transfer fee in the game's history and caused a sensation at the time. He gave Arsenal two solid seasons in attack as his career wound down.
