The Chapman Revolution, from 1925
Charlie Buchan
Forward1925–1928
No individual photograph is known to survive for Charlie Buchan; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.
Herbert Chapman's first major signing after taking charge in 1925, the experienced Buchan arrived from Sunderland already a full England international. He and Chapman are jointly credited with developing the revolutionary "WM" formation (built around a deep-lying "stopper" centre-half) in response to a change to the offside law that same year, a tactical shift that reshaped English football for decades.
