An England international forward whose greatest impact on football arguably happened before he even joined Arsenal: in a landmark 1963 High Court case against his previous club, Newcastle United, Eastham successfully challenged the old "retain and transfer" system that let clubs hold a player's registration hostage even after his contract had expired. The ruling reshaped player contracts across English football for good.
