Turning Professional, from 1888

Humphrey Barbour

ForwardFrom 1888

No individual photograph is known to survive for Humphrey Barbour; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.

A Scot who'd played for Third Lanark and Airdrie before crossing to Woolwich around 1888, Barbour is one of the earliest Arsenal players for whom a real scoring record survives, at a period when the team was quietly paying its players in defiance of amateur football's rules: the beginning of the road to professionalism the club would formally adopt in 1893.
