A gifted attacking player who came through the youth ranks, Merson was part of both title-winning sides of 1989 and 1991 before later speaking openly about his struggles with addiction: one of several Arsenal players of his generation, alongside Tony Adams, to do so publicly and help change how football talked about the issue.
