The Founders: Dial Square, 1886–87
David Danskin
Captain & founderBack1886
No individual photograph is known to survive for David Danskin; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.
A Scottish mechanical engineer at the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich, Danskin gathered the workmates who founded Dial Square in October 1886 and reportedly paid for the club's first football out of his own pocket. He captained the side through its earliest matches, including the 6–0 win over Eastern Wanderers on 11 December 1886 that's recognised as the club's first game.
