A former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper who'd moved south for work, Beardsley wrote to his old club asking for their spare kit: Forest sent back a set of red shirts, generally credited as the origin of Arsenal's colours. He was voted the new club's vice-captain, and by his own account carted the goalposts home for safekeeping after every match.
