Ashcroft became Arsenal's first-ever full England international, winning three caps in 1906, and set a club record of 20 clean sheets in the 1903–04 promotion season. He was sold to Blackburn Rovers in 1908, partly to help ease the club's growing financial difficulties: an early sign of the money troubles that would nearly sink Woolwich Arsenal a few years later.
