Into the Football League, from 1892
Joe Shaw
CaptainFull-back1907–1922
No individual photograph is known to survive for Joe Shaw; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.
Signed in 1907, Shaw went on to give the club sixteen years' service as a player (captaining the side from 1919) before moving into coaching. His most remarkable moment came over a decade later: when Herbert Chapman died suddenly in January 1934, Shaw stepped up as caretaker manager and steered Arsenal to the league title that same season, an extraordinary second act for a player who'd started out at the old Manor Ground.
