Building a Dynasty, 1930–1939

Bernard Joy

Defender1936–1946

No individual photograph is known to survive for Bernard Joy; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.

A schoolteacher who played as an amateur throughout his career, Joy became the last-ever amateur to play for the England senior football team, capped against Belgium in 1936, and captained Great Britain's team at the 1936 Olympics. He was part of Arsenal's 1937–38 title-winning squad before later becoming a football journalist.
