Signed from Welsh amateur football, Kelsey became one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation (Brazil's players nicknamed him "the cat with magnetic paws") and helped Arsenal to the 1952–53 title before carrying the side through its leaner years either side of 1960. He won 41 caps for Wales, then a national record for a goalkeeper, and kept goal at the 1958 World Cup, still the only finals Wales have ever reached in this period.
