Sands joined as an amateur while training to be a teacher, turned professional a few years later, and went on to make 327 league appearances across seventeen years: a club record that stood for over a decade. Nicknamed "Mr Reliable", he captained the side through the financial turmoil and eventual relegation of 1912–13, and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps on the Western Front during the First World War.
