Wilf Copping
Half-back1934–1939
No individual photograph is known to survive for Wilf Copping; see the note on the players index for why we use a plain card rather than guess.
A former Yorkshire miner nicknamed "Iron Man" for his uncompromising tackling, Copping was named man of the match for England against world champions Italy in the infamous, brutally physical 1934 "Battle of Highbury": a game in which he broke an opponent's foot inside the first two minutes and finished the match himself bandaged from knee to thigh.
