A period photo of Hapgood survives (a 1939 Hungarian sports magazine crop), but it's a casual, shirtless shot with no kit visible at all, so it isn't used here.
Signed from non-league Kettering Town for just £750, Hapgood became one of the most decorated full-backs in English football: five League titles, an FA Cup, and the England captaincy, which he held in 21 of his 30 caps. He remains one of the defining figures of Arsenal's 1930s golden age.
