A one-club man for twenty-two years (one of the longest playing careers in the club's history) Compton won the League title in 1947–48 and the FA Cup in 1950, then made his England debut in 1950 at the age of 38, still the oldest outfield debutant in the national team's history. He and his younger brother Denis are the only siblings ever to have won both a football league title and a cricket county championship.
